Most chemicals are currently
produced from oil. However, there are concerns about pollution, global warming,
the supply and cost of oil, particularly in the Middle East, and the impact
this has on the state security. There is now a political and environmental
will to change from oil-based to biologically-based renewable technologies
resulting in a resurgence in research and development of biologically produced
chemicals.

the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. Microorganisms produce
a variety of fuels and chemicals from the fermentation of sugars derived
from lignocellulosic material such as wheat straw. These natural products
of microbial metabolism do not depend on the supply and price of oil; they
are renewable and environmentally friendly.
