Responsible research and innovation
Our employees are very aware of their obligation to use science and technology responsibly as a way to solve some of society’s problems. Our scientists adhere to all relevant regulations and we have an embedded health and safety culture. All of our projects incorporate RRI elements within their framework and we collaborate with social scientists to ensure we ask the right questions and take on board viewpoints from a range of stakeholders. Ultimately we need to be confident that we are doing the right thing for the right reasons – just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should.
Our staff regularly engage in education and outreach programmes and many of them are active STEM ambassadors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Our activities range from visiting schools and universities as guest speakers through to hosting school students on work experience and offering internship placements for university students. Our scientists also enjoy taking time out of the lab to share their passion for STEM subjects by participating in science festivals and similar events.
