innovation

DNA sequence analysis and bioinformatics are used to develop PCR based screens for promising thermophiles.

GBL employs novel research techniques and innovative approaches towards microbial strain collection, isolation and the development of industrial strains.

A Unique Culture Collection

GBL focuses on the isolation and collection of thermophiles from hot environments, in particular from biologically self-heated composts. The company is rapidly building an extensive culture collection of thermophiles with diverse properties of commercial potential.

Scientific Composting

GBL is engaged in a rigorous scientific study on composting. Key compost sites have been carefully selected and are regularly monitored and sampled. Controlled compost heaps are used to trial thermophiles under more defined nutrient, pH and temperature regimes.

Metabolic Engineering is used to generate a second generation of industrial thermophiles.
Screening Technology

GBL has taken advantage of the advances in genomic DNA sequence analysis and bioinformatics to develop gene amplification and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based screens for robust thermophiles and specific enzymes and metabolic products.

Metabolic Pathway Engineering

GBL has developed genetic manipulation systems for difficult and under-exploited microorganisms such as thermophiles and anaerobes. Metabolic pathway engineering  is used to maximise product yield from promising wildtype organisms resulting in a second generation of industrial microorganisms.

Fermentation Process Optimisation

GBL applies its knowledge in microbial physiology and fermentation technology to optimise environmental process parameters for improved yield and productivity.
