	Dr Mike Wright

Mike has a Ph.D. in Environmental Microbiology from Cranfield University and an MBA from the Open University. Mike has considerable technical experience in Biocatalysis and Biodegradation, manufacturing optically active intermediates for prostaglandin synthesis for GSK. Mike was general manager of Analytical & Research Services at BP Castrol overseeing research projects as diverse as “chemist in a brief case” (using XRF and capillary electrophoresis) and real-time monitoring and control of microorganisms in complex fluids. Mike was also General Manager of Tetricus Ltd, a Biotech start up. Mike is now the interim CEO for EKB Technology Ltd, an Oxford University spinout, developing bioprocessing technologies for the production of pharmaceutical intermediates and fine chemicals and a Director of the Southern Oxfordshire Enterprise Hub.

	Dr Edward M Green

Edward graduated in 1993 with a Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). Edward has a strong technical background with considerable experience in molecular biology, microbiology and microbial fermentation. Edward spent five years in academia: three years in the Biochemistry Department at Rice University, Texas, US and two years in the Microbiology Department at Gothenburg University, Sweden. In 1998, he joined Agrol Ltd., a UK-based biotech company where he established a multidisciplinary team of scientists working on high temperature microorganisms. Edward left in 2003 to set up and build GBL into a profitable company with revenue from strategic service contracts as well as grant funding and equity investment.

	Dr E Timothy Davies

Tim graduated in 1995 with a Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering from UMIST. Tim has considerable experience in fermentation process optimization and protein purification. Tim spent three years in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Georgia (UGA). In 1998 he joined Aureozyme, a biotechnology company based at UGA that developed industrial hydrolytic enzymes. In 2001 Tim became the Director of the Bioexpression and Fermentation (BFF) contract facility at UGA and currently manages a team of scientists and technicians with a budget of over $500,000 per year. Tim is also a founder and partner in Downstream Biotech Consulting Inc.

	Dr Renia T Gemmell

Dr Renia T Gemmell (Project Manager)

Renia is an experienced microbiologist responsible for the isolation and characterisation of new thermophiles with commercial potential. Renia graduated from the University of Leicester with a B.Sc. in Biological Sciences in 1990 and a Ph.D. in Microbiology in 1996. Over the last seven years Renia has worked in both academia and industry with a wide range of extremophilic bacteria including halophiles, acidophiles, thermophiles and anaerobes.

Ling graduated from Plymouth University in 2001 with a B.Sc. in Biological Sciences, specialising in microbiology. After a period of travelling, Ling worked for several biotech companies gaining valuable industrial experience. Ling joined GBL in September 2003 and has been instrumental in setting up the laboratory.

Dr Gill Stephens (Scientific)

Gill is a senior lecturer at the University of Manchester and Director of Research Operations at the new Centre of Excellence in Biocatalysis in Manchester, following on from her previous work as Research Director for Pro-Bio Faraday partnership. Gill specialises in biotransformations, using enzymes from anaerobic bacteria for novel reductions. Recent successes include discovery of an alkene reductase that catalyses enantioselective reduction of alpha-substituted nitroalkenes, a highly efficient nitroalkene reductase, biocatalytic imine reduction and the first example of a biocatalytic amide reduction. The research includes development of novel high throughput screens (e.g. combinatorial biocatalysis) and the use of non-aqueous reaction media.

Alison Saunders(Market Analysis)

Alison has a BSc in Biochemistry from Imperial College, University of London and an Executive MBA from Henley Management College. Alison has considerable commercial experience of product development. She has general management and marketing experience from work at ICI/Zeneca, Technology Assessment Group, and Quintiles. She is currently a director of BioExcel and The Pharma Group (serving UK and overseas clients respectively), specialising in the Pharmaceutical and Bioscience sectors. Alison is also a visiting lecturer at Oxford Brookes University Business School.
