What does GBL manufacture?
Green Biologics Ltd. is an industrial biotechnology and renewable chemicals company that will manufacture renewable n-butanol, acetone and C4 derivatives products from renewable carbon sources such as wood and forest residues, temperate prairie grasses, bagasse, corn stover, green bio-waste, sweet sorghum, corn and sugar beets. We are also an advanced biofuels company. We will market biobutanol as an advanced biofuel for aviation and ground transportation fuels.
Where are GBL facilities located?
GBL is based out of Abingdon, Oxfordshire U.K. where we have offices and laboratories. We also have lab and pilot plant facilities in Gahanna, Ohio in the greater Columbus metro area. We have a demonstration facility in Emmetsburg, Iowa and we’ve recently announced that we’ve signed a Letter of Intent to acquire our first U.S. production facility in Little Falls, Minnesota. We also have a corporate office in Ashland, Virginia in the greater Richmond area.
How many employees does the company have?
GBL currently has less than 40 employees, excluding consultants and contract employees who often work for us nearly full time. Most of our employees are involved in R&D; or pilot plant production. Many have PhD’s or MSc’s.
How long has GBL been in business?
GBL was founded in Oxford in 2003. On January 1, 2012, GBL merged with butylfuel™ Inc. (BF), an Ohio company founded in 1991 as Environmental Energy Inc. (EEI) by David Ramey. EEI was acquired by a private investor in 2006, and in 2007 the name was changed to butylfuel™ to reflect a new focus on biobutanol as a renewable fuel. Since the 2012 merger, we now operate globally under the Green Biologics name with a core focus on renewable chemicals.
What new products is GBL interested in?
Our core products are renewable n-butanol, and a co-product to bio-based n-butanol, acetone. Butanol is used extensively in paints, coatings and adhesives as both a solvent and a feedstock to derivative products used as solvents and monomers. Our primary focus is on C4 derivatives that can be produced from our core technology platform.
What types of jobs will GBL need in the future?
As we accelerate our technology development, we see a need for additional resources in R&D; and engineering/plant scale up, as well as business development, accounting and administrative. We are an industrial biotechnology company, and we anticipate staffing needs in microbiology, chemistry and chemical engineering in particular. As we initiate the retrofitting of our first facility, we may find a need for engineers, production personnel and plant management.
What skills and educational backgrounds are required?
We are a high performance, team-based organization. We’re looking for solid team players who share our vision of a green economy powered by technology, sustainable chemistry and biotechnology, and a strong desire to leave our earth in better shape than we found it. Team skills are important, along with an ability to communicate, and a desire to help carry the vision of GBL to fruition. Solid skills in your fundamental career area are extremely important (e.g. engineering, microbiology, chemistry). Most of our new hires will hold PhD’s or MSc degrees; technician positions require B.S. degrees.
