Molecular Biologist
Green Biologics Limited (GBL) is an industrial biotechnology company with R&D; facilities on Milton Park, near Didcot, Oxfordshire, UK, pilot facilities in Gahanna, Ohio, USA and operations on four continents. The company delivers technical improvements in the clostridial butanol fermentation process focusing on microbial strain improvement and fermentation process optimisation.
Due to company expansion we are adding a full time molecular biologist to the team, to be based at our Abingdon location. Based in the molecular biology group, but working closely with the microbiology and fermentation groups, the molecular biologist will have responsibility for designing and carrying out experiments under the guidance of a senior scientist using the GBL culture collection to mine for new gene targets, develop genetic tools and engineer strains with superior characteristics.
The successful candidate will have:
ESSENTIAL
– BSc or MRes in molecular biology related subject
– At least 12 months practical experience, preferably in an industrial
setting
– Highly competent in all aspects of basic DNA manipulation (cloning, PCR
etc)
– Knowledge and experience of microbial RNA extraction and design of
qPCR experiments
– Proficient in microbiology aseptic technique
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills
– Ability to follow and develop standard operating procedures
– Ability to work both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary
team
– Excellent time management and organisational skills
– Willingness to assist in carrying out other basic lab tasks in order to
maintain lab efficiency
DESIRABLE
– Experience of growing and manipulating anaerobic bacteria (particularly
Clostridia)
– Experience of using B. subtilis as a cloning host
– Previous experience using cloning software such as DNAStar Lasergene
– Knowledge of microbial metabolic pathways e.g. solventogenesis and
feedstock / sugar utilisation
